Tradition (Hildegard's writings)

In Hildegard's tradition, southernwood juice was associated with external use on the hands and limbs.

Ingredients

Fresh southernwood (Artemisia abrotanum).

Preparation 1

For the salve, southernwood is ground and worked with olive oil; tradition also records laying the ground plant on directly.

Note

External use only. Test on a small area of skin before using it more widely.

Botanical background

Like wormwood and mugwort, southernwood is one of the Artemisia species and has a strongly aromatic scent.
