Tradition (Hildegard's writings)

In Hildegard's tradition, iris root powder blend (“nerve root powder”) was associated with the nerves and inner calm.

Ingredients

Iris root, greater plantain root, nutmeg and galangal root.

Preparation

Mix 10 g iris root powder, 10 g greater plantain root powder, 60 g galangal root powder and 30 g nutmeg powder.

Note

Nutmeg should not be taken in excess; in this blend the proportion is harmless.

Botanical background

Iris root (Iris germanica) contains violet-scented essential oils and isoflavonoids credited with balancing, relaxing properties; the phytohormones it contains resemble the body's own messenger substances. Greater plantain root is said to have liver-protecting properties.
