Tradition (Hildegard's writings)

In Hildegard's tradition, this blend was associated with general well-being and strengthening.

Ingredients

Aloe and myrrh in equal parts, a little less camphor, plus wild lettuce and fine breadcrumbs.

Preparation 1

Combine the ingredients in a bowl, form them into small cakes with the breadcrumbs and dry these in the sun or on a heated stone. Then grind them to a powder.

Note

Camphor is a powerful resin and does not belong in the hands of children; aloe and myrrh are likewise potent. This recipe is reproduced for cultural-historical interest only.

Botanical background

Camphor is a resin that exudes from the camphor tree; Hildegard describes it as cooling and sharp in its power.
