Tradition (Hildegard's writings)

In Hildegard's tradition, teasel salve was associated with the external care of the skin.

Ingredients

Seed head, leaves and root of the teasel (Dipsacus fullonum), with lard or fat as a base.

Preparation 1

The parts of the plant are chopped and worked into a salve with fresh lard.

Note

External use only. Test on a small area of skin first.

Botanical background

The fuller's teasel bears spiny heads that were once used to raise the nap on woollen cloth.
