Historical botanical drawing: Yarrow
Yarrow

Tradition (Hildegard's writings)

Traditionally used in Hildegard's herbal lore for the care of wounds and of stressed skin; it is also mentioned for “wounds of the soul” after loss or shock.

Ingredients

Powdered yarrow leaves and flowers.

Note 5

With serious wounds, please seek medical treatment. Skin contact with the fresh plant in sunlight can provoke skin reactions; anyone with a known hypersensitivity to plants of the daisy family should not use it.

Botanical background

The blue essential oil of yarrow, with its azulene, and its bioflavonoids are held responsible for the wound-caring effect recorded in the tradition. Progesterone-like plant substances (beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol) are known in herbal lore. The leaves and flowering shoot tips of yarrow (Achillea millefolium) are used — a member of the daisy family growing up to 80 cm tall, with finely pinnate leaves.
