Lungwort

Tradition (Hildegard's writings)

In Hildegard's tradition, lungwort was associated with the airways and the lungs.

Ingredients

Lungwort, water or wine.

Preparation

For the tea, boil 3 tbsp of lungwort with 1 litre of water for 3 minutes and strain. For the diuretic wine version, boil 3 tbsp of lungwort with 1 litre of wine for 3 minutes and strain.

Note

According to Hildegard, the wine preparation acts more strongly; where there is pain, the water version is preferred.

Botanical background

Lungwort contains mucilage polysaccharides, bioflavonoids, tannins, saponins and silicic acid, credited with mucous-membrane-protecting properties in respiratory and mucous-membrane complaints.
