Barley Extract

Decoctum Fructus Hordei

Historical tradition – not medical advice, and no health or healing claims. more

Barley

Tradition (Hildegard's writings)

In Hildegard's tradition, barley extract was associated with strengthening and — as a cosmetic — with the care of the skin.

Ingredients

Whole, natural (unhulled, untreated) barley grains.

Note

The barley water keeps for about a week in the fridge.

Botanical background

Barley grains consist mainly of carbohydrates and contain protein, minerals and fat. Studies at the University of Hamburg (Prof. Martina Kerscher) examined a skin-active growth factor (EGF) in barley extract, credited with a supporting role in skin care and skin regeneration. Calf's-foot bone broth adds collagen alongside.
